Brexit has finally happened after 4½ years of waiting – let’s use the opportunity to make Britain great again.

It’s not a great start to 2021 for importers - as stated in the trade press: ‘no happy new year for shippers, as rates stay sky high’. So what are the predictions for the coming year as we enter another lockdown - is there light at the end of the tunnel?

2021 sees positive news with the vaccine rollout in full swing, but the market remains volatile and there are still many uncertainties. Blank sailings were introduced early in 2020, but thankfully the situation is improving, with vessels being returned to service and greater capacity on some routes. There is anecdotal evidence that eye-watering rate rises are peaking – hopefully after Chinese New Year reductions will follow!

Postponed VAT accounting has arrived with Brexit and might prove to be more convenient for importers – see the government website link for more info : Check when you can account for import VAT on your VAT Return - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Don’t forget to insure your cargo – the threat of ‘General Average’ being declared on the ONE APUS accident means potentially huge costs for uninsured importers : Slow Progress in Cleaning Up Containers Aboard ONE Apus.
